Description

Vintage Klytie Pate Australian Studio Pottery Coffee Pot

This highly distinctive lidded coffee pot was created by noted Australian ceramic artist Klytie Pate and dates from approximately the 1970s.

The vessel has a tall, gently tapering body with an integrated sculptural handle and a broad, upward-curving pouring spout. Its fitted lid is finished with an expressive raised finial that complements the organic form of the pot.

The surface is predominantly black, with irregular mottled areas of turquoise and green glaze concentrated around the shoulder, spout, handle and lid. The variation within the glaze gives the piece a dramatic, almost patinated appearance and highlights the handmade character of Pate’s work.

The base carries Klytie Pate’s incised signature.

With its strong silhouette, unusual glaze treatment and excellent condition, this coffee pot is an impressive example of postwar Australian studio ceramics.
