Premier Pottery Preston PPP Hand-Painted Jug
An Expressive Example of Early Australian Art Pottery
This small but visually commanding jug was produced by **Premier Pottery at Preston, Victoria**, and carries the pottery’s early circular **PPP mark** to the base.
Formed in glazed earthenware, the jug has a rounded squat body with broad shoulders, a gently pinched pouring lip and an applied loop handle. Its compact proportions give the piece a distinctly sculptural character.
The exterior is decorated by hand in a striking combination of warm ochre yellow, muted red, earthy brown and deep blue-black. Loose black linework travels across the coloured fields, creating an expressive abstract composition that changes as the jug is viewed from different sides.
The curved handle is finished predominantly in red with individual black painted details. A black glazed band follows the irregular rim, contrasting with the warm mustard-yellow glazed interior
Early PPP Mark
The underside bears a clearly visible circular **PPP factory mark**. This mark is associated with Premier Pottery Preston’s early period, generally dating from approximately 1930 to 1934.
These early PPP-marked wares preceded much of the pottery’s better-known Remued production and are now sought by collectors of Australian ceramics.
A Unique Hand-Decorated Piece
The decoration was applied freely by hand rather than through a transfer or repeated pattern. Each elevation therefore presents a different arrangement of colour, brushwork and fluid black outlines.
This individuality is an important part of the jug’s appeal and gives it a remarkably contemporary appearance despite having been produced during the early 1930s.

Condition Report
The jug is presented in vintage condition with age-related glaze crazing, minor surface marks and small areas of glaze wear.
The slightly irregular rim and pinched pouring lip are consistent with the handmade character of the vessel. No major cracks or significant structural damage were observed during photography.
