Royal Doulton Captain Cook Bicentenary Loving Cup
This impressive Royal Doulton black basalt loving cup was produced in England in 1970 to commemorate the bicentenary of Captain James Cook’s landing in Australia in 1770.
The large two-handled vessel is decorated on the front with a raised portrait of Captain Cook beneath gilt CAPTAIN COOK lettering. The reverse presents an extensive historical relief scene associated with the landing and the voyage of the Endeavour, with further gilt detailing completing the design.
Individually numbered 143 of only 500 examples, this piece retains both its original Royal Doulton certificate and fitted green presentation box.
Historical and decorative appeal
Royal Doulton produced the loving cup as a substantial limited-edition commemorative rather than an ordinary domestic drinking vessel. Its large scale, matte black basalt body and crisply moulded relief decoration give it considerable presence when displayed.
The work sits at the intersection of several collecting fields, including Royal Doulton pottery, Australian historical memorabilia, maritime history and Captain Cook commemoratives.
