Description

Ric Elliot Ladies Hairdresser Signed Australian Streetscape Oil Painting

An original signed oil painting by Australian artist Ric Elliot (1933–1995), also catalogued under the alternative spelling Ric Elliott.

Known as Ladies Hairdresser, the painting depicts a characterful Australian urban streetscape dominated by a faded ladies’ hairdresser sign painted across the wall of a substantial red-brick building. In the foreground, modest cottages, corrugated roofs, chimneys, telegraph poles, fencing and garden plants create a layered record of an older working neighbourhood.

Elliot’s textured handling and restrained palette capture the weathered surfaces and irregular architecture of the scene. The white cottages and blue-grey roofs contrast strongly with the large red-brick wall, while telegraph wires and rows of chimneys lead the viewer through the composition.

Although the architecture may resemble inner Melbourne suburbs such as Carlton North, Fitzroy or Richmond, the exact location has not been confirmed. Elliot is particularly recognised for paintings of older Sydney neighbourhoods, but he also painted locations throughout Australia. The scene is therefore described conservatively as an unidentified Australian urban streetscape.

The work is signed Ric Elliot to the lower right. The painting remains in its substantial vintage cream, silver and gold-toned frame with a textured fabric-style liner.

The reverse retains an original Barry’s Art Gallery label and a typed Ric Elliot artist information sheet. Barry’s Art Gallery operated from 34 Orchid Avenue, Surfers Paradise, Queensland. These surviving labels provide valuable gallery provenance and contribute to the painting’s collectability.

About Ric Elliot

Ric Elliot was an English-born Australian artist known for traditional Australian landscapes, Sydney terraces, street scenes, country towns and narrative subjects drawn from Australian history and folklore.

Published references describe Elliot as a self-taught artist. His paintings frequently record older urban districts and modest working buildings, often enlivened by signs, fences, telegraph poles and small details of everyday life.

Elliot’s original paintings have an established Australian secondary market and continue to appear through recognised Australian auction houses.

Collectability

Ladies Hairdresser is an appealing example of Ric Elliot’s urban painting. Its strong architectural composition, prominent period advertising sign, original signature and surviving Barry’s Art Gallery labels give it both decorative and historical interest.

The work will appeal to collectors of Ric Elliot, traditional Australian art, urban landscapes, historic architecture and paintings documenting changing Australian neighbourhoods.
