Description

Mary Watson Signed Australian Landscape Oil Paintings – A Cool Spot and Summer Shade

A charming matching pair of original Australian landscape oil paintings by Mary Watson, a Victorian artist known to have been active during the 1980s.

Individually titled A Cool Spot and Summer Shade, the paintings depict peaceful Australian forest landscapes with tall gum trees, dense foliage, rocks and gently flowing bush streams. Their related subjects, matching dimensions and complementary compositions make them especially appealing when displayed together.

Both paintings are signed Mary Watson lower right and retain their original artist labels and handwritten title labels on the reverse. The labels associate the artist with “Greenwood” at The Basin, Victoria, near Melbourne’s Dandenong Ranges.

About Mary Watson

Mary Watson was a traditional Australian landscape painter whose documented subjects include the Buckland River, Kiewa Valley, Wandiligong and other forest, mountain and river landscapes across Victoria.

In 1988, Watson won the Pair of Small Paintings section at the Wangaratta Art Show. Her award-winning painting The Buckland River is now held in the Rural City of Wangaratta Collection through Wangaratta Art Gallery.

Her known paintings demonstrate a particular interest in sheltered forest scenes, waterways and the mountain landscapes of north-eastern Victoria. Public information about her birth, education and wider exhibition history remains limited.

Presentation

The paintings are presented under glass with wide neutral-toned mats and matching gilt-toned timber frames. The exact painting support is concealed by the original framing and has not been disturbed.

These are best described as a pair of companion paintings rather than a diptych because each is a complete individual composition.
