Arnaud Barraud Australian Studio Pottery Bowl
A substantial and visually striking Australian studio pottery bowl by ceramicist Arnaud Barraud, distinguished by its rich combination of deep blue, violet, red and iron-toned glazes.
The generous bowl form provides a broad surface across which the glazes interact. Areas of intense cobalt and violet-blue are broken by lighter textured glaze effects before meeting a sweeping red field with darker iron-toned detail. The deep red glazed rim provides a strong visual boundary around the composition.
Measuring approximately 26 cm in diameter and 12.5 cm high, and weighing 2.274 kg, this is a particularly substantial piece of Barraud’s studio pottery.
Arnaud Barraud was born in Palmerston North, New Zealand, in 1942. After initially studying architecture and spending time as a painter and sculptor, he began making pottery professionally around 1970. He later settled in Australia and has been associated with Victoria’s studio ceramics community for many years.
His production encompasses both functional and decorative ceramics, particularly stoneware, and examples of his work are commonly identified by an impressed AB maker’s mark.
