Born in Palmerston North, New Zealand, in 1942, Barraud initially studied architecture before working as a painter and sculptor. He began making pottery professionally around 1970 and subsequently moved to Australia, eventually establishing himself in Victoria’s Dandenong Ranges.

Barraud’s work encompasses both functional and decorative ceramics, particularly stoneware, with considerable variation in form, glaze and surface treatment. His pottery is commonly identified by an impressed AB maker’s mark.
