Martin Boyd Pottery was established in Sydney in 1946 by sculptor and potter Guy Boyd, a son of pioneering Australian potter William Merric Boyd. Despite its name, the commercial pottery was not founded by the novelist Martin à Beckett Boyd. The business was named in recognition of Guy Boyd’s uncle and formed part of the wider artistic legacy of the Boyd family.

Martin Boyd Pottery produced a varied range of decorative and functional Australian ceramics, including bowls, dishes, ramekins, ashtrays, vases and commissioned advertising pieces. Surviving examples are recognised for their strong mid-century forms, contrasting glazes, incised or hand-painted decoration and distinctive Martin Boyd workshop signatures.

Pieces may feature Australian animals, plants, figurative subjects, geometric designs, commercial emblems and richly coloured glaze combinations. Because Martin Boyd Pottery operated as a commercial workshop, considerable variation can occur between forms, signatures, decorators and production periods.
