Established in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, in 1894, Beswick became one of England’s most recognised producers of ceramic animal figures. The company is particularly admired for its lifelike horses, pedigree dogs, cattle, farm animals, birds, wildlife and much-loved Beatrix Potter characters.

Many Beswick animals were based on recognised breeds or individual champion animals. Their accurate modelling, expressive features and detailed hand-painted decoration helped distinguish Beswick from the more general decorative figurines produced by many other English factories.

Important Beswick designers and modellers included Arthur Gredington, Albert Hallam, Colin Melbourne and Graham Tongue. Arthur Gredington, who joined Beswick in 1939, was especially influential in establishing the company’s reputation for realistic horses, dogs and farm animals.

Beswick produced figures in both gloss and matt finishes. Some subjects were issued in different sizes, poses and colourways, giving collectors the opportunity to form matched groups or concentrate on a particular animal, breed or designer.

Marks may include Beswick England, Beswick Made in England, John Beswick Ltd, impressed model numbers, character names or the registered names of champion animals. An impressed model number identifies the design and should not automatically be interpreted as the year of manufacture.

Royal Doulton acquired Beswick in 1969, but many established models continued to be produced with Beswick markings. Later Royal Doulton, Royal Albert and modern John Beswick figures should be distinguished from original vintage Beswick production when identifying and valuing an item.

Condition is particularly important. Ears, tails, legs, hooves, horns and other projecting details should be inspected carefully for chips, cracks or restoration. Original boxes, uncommon colourways, desirable model numbers and excellent condition can all increase collector interest.
