Description
This fascinating collection comprises five original vintage Australian cardboard milk-bottle caps, traditionally known as milk-bottle wads.
The group represents four Victorian dairy names and includes two Braemar Dairy caps from Woodend, a Rosanna Dairy Nursery Milk cap, a Hygienic Dairy Pasteurised Milk cap from Porter Road in Heidelberg and a Metropolitan Dairy Farmers Ltd Pura Thickened Cream cap.
The Rosanna Dairy cap is marked “Nursery Milk” and states that its contents were guaranteed to come from non-reacting tuberculin-tested cows. This wording reflects the strong emphasis that historical dairy advertising placed on milk safety, herd testing and public health.
The Pura cap is marked “17 Thickened Cream” and records a milk-fat content of not less than 35 percent. It also states that the cream was thickened with gelatine. The two Braemar Dairy caps carry reminders to rinse and promptly return the reusable glass bottles.
These cardboard discs were pressed into the mouths of glass milk and cream bottles before plastic milk containers became commonplace. They provide an evocative record of Victoria’s former local dairies, household milk deliveries and reusable glass-bottle system.
An appealing display group for collectors of Australian dairy advertising, antique milk bottles, Victorian local history, vintage packaging, kitchenalia and commercial ephemera.
The five caps have a combined weight of approximately 5 grams. Each measures approximately 4.5 centimetres in diameter and 0.5 centimetres thick.
They remain in very good vintage condition with attractive original red and blue printing. There is light age toning, minor edge wear and small surface marks consistent with their age and original use. The Rosanna Dairy cap has a visible crease, while the Hygienic Dairy cap has a small central indentation. No major tears or substantial losses are apparent.
Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form part of the condition description.
