Description

This late Victorian olive-black glass beverage bottle dates to approximately c.1880–1900 and is a characterful example of utilitarian bottle manufacture from the period.

Made from extremely dark olive-green glass, the bottle appears almost black under normal lighting but reveals its olive colouring when held to strong light. It features a substantial hand-finished neck, rounded shoulders, heavy glass construction and a deeply pushed-up base.

The mouth and lip are slightly irregular and show old wear or historic loss. Importantly, the affected edges are smooth and well worn to the touch, with no sharp or freshly fractured areas apparent. The wear appears long-standing and consistent with the bottle’s considerable age and use.

Areas of old soil or mineral accretion remain around the upper neck and lip. These deposits are consistent with possible historical burial or ground recovery, although the bottle’s earlier provenance is unknown. They have intentionally been left largely undisturbed to preserve its aged character.

The glass also displays bubbles, surface variations, scratches and manufacturing irregularities consistent with period bottle production.

The bottle was most likely originally used for wine, beer, ale or another bottled beverage requiring a cork closure.

Pottery glazes:

Pottery glaze sustainability and durability rely on precise glaze chemistry engineering. By optimizing formulations, we at TMC Pottery enhance glaze durability, reducing environmental impact. Sustainable glazes use low-toxicity ingredients and locally sourced materials. Balancing silica, alumina, and controlled flux ratios ensures longevity and wear resistance. These approaches promote lasting glaze resilience and eco-friendly ceramics.

Clays:

Pottery clay sustainability and durability depend on the quality and firing process. Low-absorption clay, fired to the manufacturer’s recommended temperature, ensures resilience and longevity. Proper firing enhances the durability and sustainability of pottery, resulting in long-lasting, high-quality creations.

The ceramics clay we use at TMC Pottery is fired to the manufacturer’s recommended temperature. This ensures a very low absorption rate, as indicated in their own data sheets.
