Description

Remued Shape 42M Branch-Handled Vase

This distinctive Australian art pottery vase was produced by Premier Pottery Preston under its celebrated Remued name.

The underside is clearly incised: Remued 42M

The vase has a generously rounded, hand-thrown body with a raised circular neck and an asymmetrical applied branch-form handle.

Its sculptural handle follows the contour of the body and gives the vase a strong naturalistic character without the use of separate applied leaf decoration.

The glaze is primarily composed of layered green tones. Deep emerald and turquoise-green cover much of the lower body, while softer pale green and celadon tones appear across the shoulder.

Around the neck, rim and branch handle are small touches of cream, warm brown and restrained mauve-pink. These colours appear as subtle drips and irregular glaze movement rather than as dominant areas of colour.

Visible horizontal throwing lines around the body emphasise its handmade construction. Vertical glaze runs animate the surface, while the interior is finished in a rich dark-green glaze.

Viewed from different angles, the rounded form, changing glaze and sculptural branch handle give the vase a strong and individual presence.

Collector’s Note

The incised 42M inscription identifies the Remued shape and medium-sized variation.

This example is most accurately described as a branch-handled vase. Its sculptural applied handle, substantial rounded body, clearly legible factory inscription and layered green glaze make it a particularly representative example of early Remued Australian pottery.
