A signed Reg Preston Australian studio pottery stoneware vase with a compact sculptural form and expressive abstract decoration in black, grey-green, brown, orange and red. Measuring 13 cm high and weighing 860 g, the vase carries Preston’s painted “P.” artist’s mark underneath.

Description

This striking signed Reg Preston Australian studio pottery vase combines a compact sculptural form with expressive abstract decoration in black, grey-green, brown, orange and red tones.

Despite measuring only 13 centimetres high, its substantial 860-gram weight, strongly drawn-in neck and glossy flared opening give it excellent visual presence. It would display beautifully as a standalone feature or alongside other Australian studio pottery.

The rounded body is decorated with a flowing black line that travels around the vessel through warm orange-red areas and darker circular accents. A softly mottled grey-green glaze provides contrast, while the glossy black shoulder and upper section strengthen the vase’s distinctive silhouette.

The underside carries Reg Preston’s painted “P.” artist’s mark, clearly identifying it as a signed example of his Australian studio pottery.

Condition

The vase presents very well, with minor surface and base wear consistent with age and previous display. Natural glaze, firing and handmade variations are present, including areas of uneven glaze coverage.
