Description
Geoffrey Chapman Ingleton “Shooting the Sun” – Zeehaen Signed Drypoint Etching 27/50
A finely detailed maritime drypoint etching by Australian artist, maritime historian and hydrographer Geoffrey Chapman Ingleton (1908–1998).
Titled “Shooting the Sun”, the work depicts Abel Tasman’s ship Zeehaen at sea while members of the crew take a navigational observation. The title refers to the traditional practice of measuring the sun’s altitude to help determine a vessel’s position.
The etching is signed and titled by Geoffrey Ingleton in the lower margin and individually numbered 27 from a limited edition of 50. It is presented behind glass in its existing frame.
Ingleton was recognised for his carefully researched maritime illustrations and technically accurate depictions of historic ships. His knowledge was informed by his naval service, work in hydrography and extensive research into Australian maritime exploration.
He trained in etching and produced detailed maritime prints from copper plates using a printing press at his Parramatta home. His works combine precise draughtsmanship with a strong understanding of ships, navigation and Australian maritime history.
