Description
A striking vintage Ellis Ceramics vase, model 94, with a broad, flattened body, deeply recessed sides and a sweeping rim rising to two pointed ends.
The beige and cream exterior is richly speckled with brown, contrasting with a green-glazed interior and darker tones around the rim. Fine incised, branch-like lines add a restrained decorative accent to the sculptural form.
The base bears the incised Ellis maker’s mark and model number 94. The number identifies the shape; it is not a 1994 date.

Ellis Ceramics was established in Abbotsford, Melbourne, in 1953 by Czechoslovakian migrants Dagmar and Miloslav Kratochvil, also known as Dasa and Milda. The pottery combined sculptural forms with varied glazes and hand decoration, contributing to the distinctive character of Australian ceramics in the post-war years.
Beautiful displayed on its own, this vase offers shape, texture and a connection to Melbourne’s pottery history. A distinctive choice for an Australian ceramics collector or someone who appreciates sculptural vintage design.
