Description
A substantial and beautifully proportioned studio pottery jug by Australian ceramicist Charles Wilton, an important figure within Victoria’s post-war studio pottery movement.
The wheel-thrown vessel has a full rounded body tapering through the shoulder to a narrower neck, terminating in a gently flared rim with a pronounced pouring lip.
A broad applied loop handle extends from the upper section of the jug to the body, giving the piece both visual balance and the strong functional character associated with handmade studio pottery.
The surface is finished in a rich brown to copper-brown glaze, with darker areas and subtle tonal variations created through the glazing and firing process.
At approximately 23 cm high and weighing 1,495 grams, the jug is a particularly substantial example of Wilton’s functional pottery and has considerable decorative presence.
The underside retains a clearly incised handwritten Charles Wilton signature.

Very good vintage condition overall, with minor surface marks and natural glaze and firing variations consistent with handmade studio pottery and age.

About Charles Wilton
Charles Wilton was an Australian studio potter associated particularly closely with the development of ceramics at Warrandyte in Victoria
In 1958 Wilton became one of the five founding potters of Potters Cottage, together with Reg Preston, Phyl Dunn, Artur Halpern and Gus McLaren.
Potters Cottage became an important part of Victoria’s post-war studio ceramics movement, bringing together makers interested in handmade functional pottery and individual approaches to vessel form, decoration and glaze.

Charles Wilton’s work has an important place within Australian studio pottery because of both his individual ceramics and his association with the development of Potters Cottage at Warrandyte.
