Description
Two vintage matchboxes sold together: a rectangular Captain Webb box by Bryant & May and a small cylindrical R. Bell & Co box marked Melbourne. Both retain matches, as photographed; the contents have not been verified as original to the boxes.
The Captain Webb label features a red-and-blue portrait and the words “Swam Across the English Channel Aug. 24th 1875”. Its side is marked Bryant & May, British Made, average contents 40 and 2p. The Bell cylinder has a red-and-blue checked paper covering and a printed R. Bell & Co Melbourne lid.

Collecting interest
The Captain Webb design commemorates the Channel swimmer rather than dating the box to 1875. Its 2p marking suggests a later decimal-era example. Together with the Melbourne-labelled Bell cylinder, it offers contrasting packaging shapes and graphics for a phillumeny, advertising or everyday-history collection.
Collection
Local collection only while the matches remain included. No postal delivery is offered for this lot.
