Una Deerbon: Pioneer of Australian Pottery
Una Deerbon (1882-1972) was a trailblazer in Australian pottery, known for her innovative designs and vibrant ceramics. Born Una Clare Eden Deane in Woollahra, NSW, she studied under Julian Ashton and Rayner Hoff at the Sydney Art School and continued her education in New York, Chicago, Paris, and London.
Initially an artist and fashion designer at David Jones in Sydney, Deerbon also published humorous postcards under the name Una Darlow. After her divorce in 1920, she moved to Brisbane, discovered her passion for pottery, and married Czech economist Charles Francis Deerbon.
In 1931, she exhibited her pottery at the NSW Society of Arts and Crafts, gaining significant recognition. Her 1933 exhibition at Anthony Hordern’s gallery featured over 200 pieces, praised for their variety and delicate forms. She also exhibited 100 ceramics at the Myer Emporium in Melbourne.
Deerbon’s pottery, known for its basic forms and hard-glazed earthenware flora and fauna, showcased her creativity and skill. In 1934, she founded the Una Deerbon School of Pottery in Melbourne, influencing many potters, including John Castle-Harris and Eric Juckert.
Her work was celebrated for its originality and charm, with pieces held in esteemed collections like the Australian National Gallery and the Powerhouse Museum. Her ceramics have commanded high prices at auctions since 2010, reflecting her enduring legacy.
