Dermont James John Hellier (Australian 1916-2006) Bio
Born in 1916 Albury New South Wales Australia Dermont studied at the early age of 9 years old under Scottish artist Sarah Kyle in Sydney Dermont also studied at the National Gallery Victoria School under Charles Wheeler In 1942 Dermont joined the armed forces where he made friends with War artist of the time Henry Wanke it was during this time Dermont managed to do a number of drawings and paintings After serving in New Guinea he resumed his studies under Harold Septimus Power the great horse and animal painter he also painted regularly with Ernest Buckmaster – Max Middleton painted a portrait of Dermont’s wife Jeannie Hellier in 1948 Dermont is best known for his scenic coastal and snow landscapes and for his flower studies He has held over 20 exhibitions, including a successful one-man exhibition in 1966 at the Qantas Galleries West End London Dermont’s work is represented in the Queen Mothers Collection Clarence House London plus State and provincial collections
