Gria Shead (Australian 1972-) Bio
“More than anything it was my studies of the Heidelberg School that alerted me to the absence of the Other in the Australian cultural record”
Gria the daughter of artist Gary Shead Gria in 1992 was an apprentice to Printmaker Gaye Paterson-Lamb in Washington DC USA and in 1995 she graduated from the National Art School in East Sydney Gria had her first solo exhibition in 1996 at Selborne Chambers NSW and her first group exhibition in 1994 Gria has held solo shows at NandaHobbs Contemporary and numerous other galleries across Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra including Tim Olsen Gallery Sydney and James Makin Gallery Melbourne as well as exhibiting at the Australian High Commission Residence Singapore in 2014 Her participation in group exhibitions includes Journeys West at Orange Regional Gallery in 2014 and Past Present Future at Walcha Gallery of Art NSW in 2018 Gria married fellow artist Luke Sciberras and the couple had a daughter Stella and lived together in Hill End a former gold rush town and popular artist residency formerly home to Russel Drysdale, Donald Friend, Jeffrey Smart, Brett Whiteley, Margaret Olley and others Shead has been finalist in many prizes including the Mosman Art Prize; the Tattersall’s Art Prize three times, Meroogal Art Prizes and has won two awards at the National Art School in both printmaking and drawing now living and working in Sydney Gria is also teaching at the Waverley Woollahra Art School Gria work is held at the University of Sydney and in private collections worldwide.
