Phyl Paulina Waterhouse (Australian 1917-1989) Bio
Phyllis known as Phyl was born in Moonee Ponds Melbourne and studied at the National Art Gallery School in Swanston St Melbourne 1932 under many including Bernard Hall having trained in the traditional tonal style Phyl found herself leaning more towards French impressionism having visited Paris and London Phyl had her first exhibition at a small gallery in Little Collins St with Arthur Evan Reed and Charles Bush later Charles painted a portrait of Phyl and subsequently entered it into the Archibald Prize for portraiture in 1958 After travelling and studying extensively throughout Europe in the early 1950s Phyl and Charles returned to Melbourne where Phyl and Charles plus opened the Leveson Street Gallery in 1962 the two later married in 1979
