Biography of the Tek Sing Shipwreck

The Tek Sing, meaning “True Star,” was a large Chinese ocean-going junk that sank in 1822 while sailing from China to Southeast Asia. Laden with precious cargo, including ceramics, the ship tragically hit a reef in the South China Sea, resulting in one of the worst maritime disasters of the 19th century.

The wreck remained undisturbed until its discovery in 1999, where it revealed a trove of beautifully preserved artifacts, offering a glimpse into the rich maritime trade of the time.

This bamboo and peony dish is a testament to the exquisite craftsmanship and trade practices of early 19th-century China. The dish’s design symbolises longevity and prosperity, making it a coveted item for collectors and enthusiasts of historical ceramics.
