Remued 178M Australian Pottery Jug
This distinctive Australian art pottery jug was produced by Premier Pottery Preston as part of its celebrated Remued range.
The compact shape is decorated with a large applied native gumleaf and gumnuts, accompanied by Remued’s characteristic naturalistic branch-form handle.
The glaze treatment is particularly noteworthy.
A rich deep red to pink body contrasts strongly with green over the applied leaf, while softer cream and beige tones appear around the neck, lip and interior.
The resulting colour combination gives the piece considerably more visual impact than many of the predominantly green and brown Remued examples commonly encountered.

Remued pottery was produced by Premier Pottery Preston in Melbourne and has become one of the best-known names in twentieth-century Australian art pottery.
Its distinctive native botanical decoration, sculptural handles, experimental glaze combinations and individually incised forms have made Remued particularly popular with collectors of Australian ceramics.

Condition
The jug presents very well and remains in very good original vintage condition.
There are no chips, cracks or restoration identified.
Minor age-related glaze crazing and normal handmade/firing variations may be present, together with a small original manufacturing blemish near the pouring lip.
The applied gumleaf and gumnut decoration and branch-form handle remain intact.

Collector’s Note
This example is particularly appealing because it combines several characteristics sought by Remued collectors: an identified numbered form, native gumleaf and gumnut decoration, a naturalistic branch handle and an unusually strong glaze combination.
The deep red/pink colouration is especially noteworthy. While individual Remued glazes vary considerably from piece to piece, strongly red and pink examples are encountered less frequently than many of the familiar green, cream and brown colourways.
It is this combination of form, decoration, glaze and condition—not simply its small size—that makes the 178M an appealing collector’s piece.
