DONALD CAMERON (Australian 1927-)

Born in Moonee Ponds Melbourne in 1927, Donald Cameron is a Painter, Engraver, Teacher & Author many publications including his Auto-biography in 2016, He first Studied at Scotch College after he began work as an engraver for the Commonwealth Bank in 1943 which he did for 15 years, while working at the Commonwealth Bank he also started working under William Dargie, studying portraiture at the National Gallery School, during 1951-1952 he won student prizes for a landscape painting (1951) and a portrait Painting (1952)

In the same year (1952) he entered the Archibald, and over his career was a finalist 13 Times, Which included many subjects such as Military Solders, Public Figures and Miss Victoria’s On two occasions his exhibits were selected to tour Australian capital cities as part of a representative Archibald collection.

Donald designed sixteen Australian stamps, and was most notably recognized for his Christmas Stamps In 1957 and again in 1958.

In the 1960s, Donald started teaching at CIT, but also In 1966 started studying at the Slade School Of London, in 1967 obtained a French government scholarship for four months to study technical art in France, then received his Diploma of Art from the Caulfield Institute in 1969, That same year becoming head of the art department of CIT, and also in 1972 to 1977 he was head of the art department at Scotch College. In 1978 he started his own studio and school of art in Melbourne.

In 1990 he was awarded the prize for “Best Pair” at the Kew Rotary Art Show. In 1995 he entered a watercolour and was awarded First Prize at the Bright Art Show, Donald Cameron has painted a number of portraits including Major-General Sir Alan Ramsay, Frank Menzies, Weary Dunlop, Sir Angus Mitchell and Ngarla Kunoth Donald has held many exhibitions for a number of years of his own work in oils, watercolours and etchings, His work is represented in Victorian provincial collection

Cameron also published many publications including his self-published Art is Adventure (1985), Black white and grey…with colour added The adventures of an Australian Artist Engraver in Paris (1986) and his auto-biography The Two-Obsessions (2016), he is now in persuade of someone to publish a book about his aunt, Ethel Gray’s Diaries, written between 1915 to 1919 during her service in World War 1
