Carl Van Nieuwmans (Holland Australian 1931-) Bio
Born in Holland in 1931 Carl Van Nieuwmans studied at the Haag academy of visual arts and in Australia at the Sydney Technical School Carl travelled throughout Australia before moving to Alice Springs where he bought Rex Battarbee’s house and gallery to use as his home, studio and gallery Carl has held several exhibitions and won awards for his work where he painted The live heart of Australia including an exhibition that was held in The Hague Exhibition Centre “Red and yellow” The exhibition was opened by the Australian Ambassador C. T. Moodie in front of 105 guests among them were Dutch Art lovers, Belgian ambassador, the wife of the British ambassador, members of the Ministry of Outside Dutch Affairs, Dutch businessmen and The Hague press of the day reported his use of colour (red and yellow) to be unbelievably exaggerated (in comparison to the gloomy and soft tones of the Dutch landscape) and not a true representation of the natural light in Australia and touted him the “Rembrandt of Australia” also Carl was the only artist to have an exhibition at the Sydney Opera House
