Sidney Goldblatt (Johannesburg South Africa 1919-1979) Bio
Sidney Goldblatt was born in Johannesburg south Africa in 1919 and had a interest in art from a early age, studying the subject in school.
Sidney worked in his family business until 1949 when he decided to study art abroad at the Anglo-French Art Centre in London and then again in Paris the following year with Andre Lhote and Fernand Leger with Sculpture at John Cass Academy London. During these times he started to develop his own style of art.
In 1951 he returned to Johannesburg following the passing of his farther, He continued to paint and started an art studio in Johannesburg where he began teaching by 1955.
With the studio a success in 1957 Sidney spent a year abroad, traveling to London via France and eventually settled in Marbella Spain where he painted the surrounding landscape and villages, Returning to Johannesburg in 1958 where he continued to build the teaching studio for a number of years.
Sidney began to exhibit non-figurative works around 1964, Won the Cambridge Shirt Award on Art-SA-Today in Durban and continued to travel abroad to Europe and the USA over the space of a decade.
In 1970 Sidney Goldblatt began to produce sculpture with his first exhibition held in 1971. Between 1973-1979 he worked on a series of paintings based on the Yom Kippur War, Designed South Africa’s first wine label and held a large exhibition with 10 of his former students in 1979
His works are held in a number of galleries around the world including the William Humphreys Gallery, South African National Gallery, Pietersburg Collection and Israel Museum Jerusalem.
