Peter Tensley (American) Bio

Peter Tinsley Born 1908, American citizen of Chinese descent, very limited formal training. At age 20 he began selling paintings in streets of Los Angeles. He also sold his paintings (watercolours) out of financial desperation. After two years of struggle to survive, he joined the Army.

He returned from the service with his left hand and leg seriously injured, but fortunately had not lost his artistic talent and pursued painting with even greater discipline and organization. Intense work over the course of a year led him to his first gallery contract in San Francisco. He received 10% of the sales for his first showing.

This information was attached to a painting purchased in the late 1970s and went on to say “Today Peter Tinsley has made his home in Denver, Colorado. He paints in a small studio and also teaches art. He receives many requests from famous personalities to teach their children. Tensley’s paintings have received raves in Canada, Japan, Australia, as well as here in the United States. Tinsley’s works can be found in the collections of Senator Kennedy, Senator Goldwater, Jerry Lewis and Paul Newman.
