Francis Dennis Ramsay (1925-2009 English/Australian) Bio
Dennis Ramsay was born in London in 1919. He was related to the Scottish artists Allan Ramsay (1713–1784) and James Ramsay (1759–1854).
Ramsay served in the RAF towards the later part of WW-2.
He studied architecture at the University Collage Of London during 1953-1955 and was a pupil of Pietro Annigoni who was a renowned Italian portrait painter.
His works comprise of many different mediums including Watercolour, Drawing, Oil and in China Ink. But he is most notably known for his works done in the historic medium of oil tempera. Which involves mixing egg yolk, pigment, varnish, a form of preservative and oil together to create a long lasting paint that can be applied very thinly compared to normal oil paint. His portraits and still-lifes are highly detailed with luminous colours. Important sitters include Princess Alexandra, Sir Winston Churchill and Prince Philip.
Ramsay travelled in many parts of the world with his works being exhibited worldwide Including places like Royal Academy Of London, Royal Portrait Society Of London, Pieter Wenning Gallery, Van Der Straeten Gallery, Adam Galleries and the National Gallery Of Scotland. Circa 1980s Ramsay settled in Melbourne Australia where he continued to Paint and exhibit until his passing in 2009.
