Leonard Hugh Long was an Australian painter well known for his outback Landscapes in a partially realistic style and is considered one of Australia’s greatest post-war landscape artists Born in New South Wales in 1911 Leonard lived in the Mittagong area until 1934 He began painting in the 1930s, Leonard often focused on vast landscapes, rivers and gorges, Such as the Flinders Ranges and the majestic Shoalhaven region, inspired by the perspective of space and atmosphere revealed as the rivers of water flowed off into the distance His first overseas trip was sponsored by the American millionaire John Galvin the experiences made a large impression on the artist. Leonard was also greatly influenced by the earlier works done by painters of the Heidelberg School, which included Arthur Streeton and Charles Conder plus Hermannsburg School Artist Albert Namatjira (Whom he Became Good friends with) over the years, Leonard himself also inspired many other well-known landscape artists, his works are highly valued by collectors Leonard held numerous exhibitions Leonard held his final exhibition in Yass New South Wales in 2011 at the age of 100 In 1993 Leonard Long was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for service to the arts as a painter of Australian landscapes, Leonards works are represented in several major public collections including the HRH The Queen Mother’s Collection, The Vatican Collection Rome, The Art Gallery of NSW, The Howard Hinton Collection Bunbury WA, The National Gallery Kuala Lumpur, The Rockhampton Art Gallery, The Dunedin Art Gallery, The Benalla Art Gallery & The Broken Hill Art Gallery
