Description
An attractive antique R. Harrison Fitzroy Codd bottle in pale aqua glass, featuring the distinctive internal glass marble closure associated with early aerated-water and soft-drink bottles.
The bottle is prominently embossed R. Harrison and Fitzroy, together with a decorative monogram and further embossed detail to the base. Its strong local association with Fitzroy, Melbourne gives the piece particular interest for collectors of Australian bottles, Melbourne memorabilia and early commercial glass.
Codd bottles were designed for carbonated drinks, with internal pressure forcing the glass marble against a sealing ring in the neck. The unusual bottle form has since become one of the most recognisable types of nineteenth and early twentieth-century aerated-water bottle.
This example displays an appealing pale aqua colour together with the bubbles, surface irregularities and character associated with early utility glass.
