Dermont James John Hellier (Australian 1916-2006)
Born in New South Wales Australia 1916, Dermont studied at an early age of nine years under British artist Sarah Kyle in Sydney, he completed further studies at the National Gallery in Melbourne under Charles Wheeler, he also painted regularly with Ernest Buckmaster.
He joined the armed forces in 1942, serving in Australia and New Guinea. During which time he managed to do a number of drawings and paintings and made friends with Henry Hank in Milne Bay 1943, an official war artist at the time. After discharge from the services he continued his studies with Harold Septimus Power, the great horse and animal painter here in Melbourne.
Max Middleton painted Dermont’s wife Jeannie Hellier portrait in 1948. John is best known for his scenic coastal and snow landscapes and for his flower studies Dermont has held many one man exhibitions in the city of Melbourne, country and Interstate centres. In 1966 he went overseas and held a very successful exhibition at Qantas gallery’s West End London, He has also represented in Shepperton, Geelong, Swan Hill, Albury, Bright Gallery, The Queen Mother’s Collection Clearance House London, Sydney and Brisbane gallery’s, Many overseas collections both private and business houses including state and provincial collections
