Biography: The Legacy of Awaji Pottery

Awaji ware was founded in the early 1830s by Minpei Kashu (1796–1871), a scholar of classical literature and a master of the art of chanoyu. Coming from a wealthy trading family, Minpei was passionate about developing industrial resources in his province.

After studying ceramics under the famous Kyoto potter Ogata Shuhei (1788-1839), Minpei established his own kilns in the fifth year of Tenpō (1835/1836), although some sources cite an earlier founding year of 1831.

Minpei’s manufactory, subsidised by Lord Hachisuka of Awaji Province, reached such prosperity that its production equaled the value of the rice harvest of eleven surrounding villages. After Minpei’s death in 1862, his successors continued the tradition, making Awaji pottery a significant source of wealth for the province until the last kilns shut down in the 1930s.
