Japanese ceramic production encompasses a remarkably broad range of traditions, materials and decorative styles. These include refined porcelain, glazed and unglazed pottery, stoneware, earthenware and matt bisque figures. Well-known Japanese ceramic centres and styles include Arita and Imari porcelain, Kutani ware, Satsuma pottery, Seto ware and the many decorative ceramics made for export during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Our collection may include pieces identified by printed backstamps, painted signatures, impressed marks, mould numbers, paper labels or characteristic decorative techniques. Some items were produced by established manufacturers, while others may come from smaller workshops or remain unidentified.

Vintage Japanese animal figurines are particularly appealing for their expressive modelling and variety of finishes. Dogs, cats, birds and other animals were produced for both the Japanese domestic market and export markets, often featuring detailed hand-painted decoration.

Each item is individually photographed and described, with available information about its maker, marks, dimensions, weight, condition and likely period of manufacture. Identification is based on the evidence visible on the individual piece and supporting research where available.
