Join us as we hand-build a Gum Leaf Open Neck Vase, perfect for adding elegance to any space. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

Cut circles from clay, shaping them on a mould. Use clay tools to shape the clay.

Repeat with the second circle.

Trim edges, score, slip, and join halves.

Pinch a seam and compress with clay tools.

Cut off end of your vase in order to form a flat base, then place vase over a small slab of clay, trace out your base, score, slip, and attach base.

Smooth surface with tools and a damp sponge.

Use a template to mark and cut a hole for the neck.

Smooth surface of base, turn over and use clay tools to finish interior/ exterior joints of vase.

To decorate the vase, trace out some leaf patterns in some clay, then cut decoration out, score, slip, and attach leaf/leaves and any embellishments to body of the vase.

Finish surface with a clay tools and damp sponge.

Ensure even drying by covering with plastic bag. Prioritise thorough drying to prevent cracks.

Proceed with bisque firing, then apply glaze or slip. A final glaze firing will unveil a breath-taking finish.
