Prepare Your Clay:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Begin with centered clay on the wheel. Ensure the clay has an even consistency, free from air pockets. <a href=\"https:\/\/themccorrycollection.com\/tmcpottery\/blog\/how-to-wedge-clay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"How To Wedge Pottery Clay\">Wedge the clay <\/a>thoroughly beforehand for optimal results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Positioning Your Hands:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Place your hands on the clay with one hand on the inside and the other on the outside. The hand on the outside should lightly press against the rotating clay (you should start seeing a lump on the outside), while the inner hand supports and guides the movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. Initiate the Pull:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the wheel spins, gently press into the clay with both hands, slightly compressing it. This initial pressure creates a stable base for your walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4. Use a Throwing Sponge:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wet your throwing sponge and keep it handy. The sponge adds moisture, preventing the clay from becoming too dry and aiding in a smooth pull. Always keep the sponge at the ready to maintain the right moisture level. But you can also use it to throw the walls up too, as you can see in the video. Just take note to not use too much water in your sponge&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5. Even Pressure:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apply consistent and even pressure with both hands as you slowly pull the clay upward. The key here is to maintain symmetry, ensuring the walls rise uniformly. Avoid putting too much pressure at once; gradual and steady is the way to go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>6. Maintain Thickness:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pay attention to the thickness of the walls. Periodically check by placing a finger on the inside to feel for any irregularities. Adjust the pressure accordingly to maintain an even thickness throughout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Repetition is key to improvement. Practice pulling up walls regularly to enhance your muscle memory and gain better control over the clay. Every potter develops a unique style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is what works for me but may not work for you, but that doesn\u2019t matter!
