Where chance meets progress

Today, we’re creating a glaze from a recipe stumbled upon during our quest for a cover glaze pivotal in crafting an oil spot glaze combination.

This glaze came from an experiment that involved applying this glaze over our extensively tested Tenmoku Recipe.

Though not the oil spot cover we seek, this glaze presented an unexpected bonus – akin to finding “diamonds in the rough.” Surprisingly, this glaze along with the Tenmoku possess all the traits we desire in functional glazes.

Firstly, both glazes boast a flux ratio conducive to durability, a crucial factor in delivering products that are microwave and dishwasher safe, yet robust for daily use. Our target flux ratio is 3:7, occasionally extending to a 2:8 ratio for functional ware.

Secondly, these glazes exhibit adequate levels of silica and alumina. This aspect is vital in ensuring complete melting and, more importantly, preventing under-firing.

It’s all in the chemistry 🤗.

While not the glaze we initially sought, we find it appealing and have chosen to utilise it.

Simultaneously, we continue our search for the perfect cover glaze and perfect Tenmoku glaze recipe.
