Wheel Throwing Walkthrough

So we have some new clay today! This is the same clay used in our studio before, same as the white number 6 we have been using but with the added speckle

The white clay has always been a little harder to work with compared to the browner clay “buff” that also has speckle, so to get pretty much the same feeling but now in the white has been great! Mum said the new bag of white clay is a lot softer too for her hand building so maybe keans have changed there formulas a little bit?

This video is a little different today, I’m pretty much running through the whole creative process and how I got about making my pots, I hope you enjoy this format of video for something a little different

I’ve made around 4 extra pieces today using this clay so excited to show you what we got over the next week! 🤗

Few Tips On How I Made This:

Begin with well-prepared clay. Wedge it thoroughly to eliminate air pockets and achieve uniform consistency. Give it a few slaps and whacks to form it into a nice round ball

Cone and centre the clay by brining your hands towards the centre of the wheel head, a lot like if you were trying to squeeze a very hard bottle of tomato sauce over your food. Then, support the side of the cone with one hand and push from the top down with the other, with an emphasis of pushing straight down

Once you have the clay centre, Open the clay by pressing your thumbs into the center, gradually widening the opening while maintaining an even thickness. Compress the base to minimise cracks too

*** Bringing the clay inwards at the top of the vase, takes a little bit of patience. My best advice is to not force it and to allow it to come in with some medium pressure. You will lose a little bit of height due to the fact that you’re not only pushing the clay towards the centre of the wheel head, but you’re also pushing it down, the top part of the vase will become thicker so make sure your walls are not too thin! ☺️

Hope you enjoyed this post and as always Happy Potting!!! 🥳🥳
