Watch us Develop a New Test Glaze from Scratch Part 1

We’re going to make a glaze from scratch.

You can buy your materials in small bags like this and smaller, from your pottery supplier.

We have shared the recipe on screen for you to copy and use later once we have come back to you in Part 2 hopefully 🤞with the right results.

First thing we do is measure out our kaolin, put the bowl on the scale, and zero it.

Take a scoop of Kaolin and weigh it, you do that for all your ingredients.

I also always take a photo so that I know that I’ve got the right grams If I muck up the recipe I can always go back and check.

Don’t forget to wipe your scoop in between adding your ingredients, so that you don’t cross contaminate your containers of ingredients.

So, we’ve got our five ingredients ready, we’ve got the kaolin, ferro-frit, Neph-Sy, the Silica, and the Calcite all weighed out.

Next, we weigh out our water, and the first thing we add to the water is kaolin, kaolin suspends all the other ingredients in the bucket.

So, we just give that kaolin a whisk, as you can see, the kaolin has suspended in the bucket, so this will suspend all the other ingredients as you add into the mixture making it easier to mix.

We then go ahead and put all the other ingredients in, giving each ingredient in turn you add a whisk after adding.

The last thing to do is to blend it with an immersion blender.

We will leave this slake for three days, and then come back, test the SG (specific Gravity) and then dip some test-tiles.

Look for part 2 where we will discuss results and any adjustments we may have to do.

Happy potting! 🤗
