This is a dark bodied clay with some pretty heavy grog in it, I had some good fun making this little vase or bottle however you want to call it, Hope you enjoy!
A few extra tips I couldn’t fit into the video
1: Heavy grogged clay can be hard to throw and rough on the hands, Slip is your friend in this case, keeping as much slip on the piece and your hand is definitely advisable when centring
2: The added grog can also be hard to get a smooth surface with, my advise is to clean up the surface as best you can with a rubber or sponge and then smooth off with you hands once leather hard, the clay will be soft enough for your hands to pull the clay over the grog and cover up a lot of the rough spots
3: Grogged clay is stronger then plastic clay and can be handled with a little more force then normal, use this to your advantage by pinching more in the clay pulls then you normally would, what you will find is the less you play around with the surface of the clay the less likely you’ll be to expose the grog, hence giving you a better finish and a quicker throw
Part Two: Here is one last pot I made with this new clay.
I’ll continue to use up the bag I have but I’ll keep it for sporadic occasions
The clay being so rough it’s better to not use too much of it in one go 😄
I am however doing this one a little differently, I’m using two sponges to get a different shape to what I’d normally throw on the wheel, I think it adds a good organic shape to the vase and will look great with one of our glazes on it ☺️
As I’ve mentioned in the video, I’ve made a vase before and altered its look once I put it together, I found the organic shape to be really nice for our glazes and looks good in the light too, the way the curves and shape catches the night, gives a lot more of a dynamic design rather then it being just a straight walled pot
I’ll be definitively doing this more going forward
With grogged clay it’s better to not play around too much, as this will bring the frog to the surface and
As always hope you enjoyed this post and Happy Potting!!! 🥳🥳
We will be back tomorrow with some more tips and ideas ❤️
