For todays pot I’ll be using a clay extruder to add some decoration to the outside
This is one of the first techniques I used back when a majority of the pots I made were hand built, its a great way to add texture and design elements especially with wheel thrown vases, while you can wait until the leather hard stage to add virtually any decoration to a thrown pot, this is a quick and easy way to do it on the day. Plus the added benefit of multiple attachments to the extruder means you can add all sorts of different shaped coils to the pot
One little tip I’ll also talk about since we are on the subject of hand clay extruders. The extrusion die gets held in place by a screw on nut, after a few months of use and cleaning this nut can get really rough and difficult to screw on, I’ve found a little bit of teflon tape on the thread works like a charm, and since teflon is hydrophobic, you can leave it on there while cleaning and continue to use it afterwards
Now when applying the coil to the outside of the pot, you want the wall to be slightly damp to act like slip for the piece your attaching. I’ve put a lot of decoration to thrown pots and as long as you apply the decoration to the wet clay it’s adheres pretty well. If the piece however is leather hard I recommend using slip 😊
By all means comment below have any other further questions
Hope you enjoyed this post and as always Happy Potting!!! 🥳🥳
