Use wooden tools to decorate while throwing, No carving tools required!

Adding decoration to your piece doesn’t have to be a hard task, it in fact can be of the most simplest tasks! Using a wooden tool like I have where in the video is a perfect example of using simple techniques to create design

How To:

Centering: Start with a lump of clay on a pottery wheel. Wet your hands and center the clay mass on the wheel to ensure balanced spinning.

Opening: Use your thumbs to create an opening in the center of the clay. Gradually widen the opening while keeping the walls even.

Pulling: Slowly pull the clay upwards to form the walls of the vase. Maintain even pressure to avoid uneven thickness.

Shaping: Gently shape the vase with your hands, ensuring a smooth and symmetrical form. Experiment with curves or angles for unique designs. I placed my hand inside the vase and lightly pushed out the base to give it a belly. Make sure you have a little extra thickness left in the base of the wall

Decorating: Now, let’s add those beautiful swirl patterns! Use wooden tools to impress delicate swirls or patterns onto the surface of the vase. Take your time but be experimental, your creation is uniquely you!

Finishing: Smooth out any rough edges and refine the shape as needed. Pay attention to details for a polished finish.

Drying: Allow the vase to dry slowly to prevent cracking. Cover loosely with plastic to regulate drying.

If you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to ask! We would love to help you with your glazing! 🤗
