Try this next time you have some leftover clay hanging around the studio!

Here’s some tips for your own marbled clay creation!

1. Prepare Your Clays: Start by selecting two different clay bodies with similar moisture content for the best results.

2. Lightly Wedge Clays Together: Take equal parts of each clay and lightly wedge them by pressing and folding a few times. Aim for a marbled effect without fully blending the clays. Stop once you see a nice marbled pattern forming.

3. Form a Ball: Shape the wedged clays into a ball, ensuring the marbling is visible on the surface. This will help maintain the pattern when you start throwing.

4. Center the Clay: Place the marbled clay ball on the wheel head and centre it by applying firm, even pressure. Centring is crucial for a balanced and symmetrical vase.

5. Open and Pull Up Walls: Open the centred clay and start pulling up the walls to your desired height. Keep your movements smooth and controlled to maintain the marbled pattern.

6. Shape the Vase: Shape the vase to your preferred form, using a damp sponge to smooth the surface and refine the shape. Pay attention to the marbled pattern as you work.

7. Remove the Slip: Once the vase is shaped, use a metal rib to carefully remove the slip from the outside of the walls. Hold the rib at a slight angle and gently scrape away the slip to reveal the beautiful marbled pattern beneath.

8. Dry and Trim: Allow the vase to dry to a leather-hard stage. Once it’s firm, trim the base to refine the shape and remove any excess clay without disturbing the marbled pattern.
