Trimming Bases

Let’s do some base turning today and add a good sized foot ring!

Follow these tips to ensure a successful and secure process 😊

1. Prepare the trimming tools: Gather the necessary trimming tools, such as a turning tool with a sharp edge, and a good quality carving tool, Ensure the tools are clean and in good condition.

2. Create small coils of clay: Take a small amount of clay and roll it into thin coils. These coils will act as support and help secure the vase on the wheel head during trimming.

3. Position the vase on the wheel head: Place the vase on the wheel head, aligning it in the center. Press the small coils of clay firmly around the base of the vase, attaching them to the wheel head. Ensure the vase is stable and secure.

5. Use the carving tool: Hold the carving tool at a slight angle and gently press it against the base of the vase. Lock your elbows into your ribs to create a stable tool, Allow the tool to do the cutting work, rather than forcing it through the clay.

6. Check the stability: As you trim, periodically check the stability of the vase on the wheel head. Adjust the small coils of clay if needed to ensure the vase remains secure.

7. Refine the base: Once the main trimming is complete, switch to a finer turning tool, finger or a rib tool to refine the base further. Smooth out any rough edges or imperfections for a polished finish.

8. Clean and finish: Clean the trimmed base with a slightly damp sponge!

Remember to work patiently and with precision during the trimming process.

Hope you enjoyed this post and as always, Happy Potting! 🥳
