Throwing Day With Black Clay

Well for a slightly different video today i thought id show. You a little more of the process when wheel throwing!

This is the beautiful Keanes midfire black clay and I’m using roughly about 2kgs of clay for this throw. The clay generally is a very easy clay to throw with a bit of plasticity to it. Making it very easy to pulls walls up.

Because of the softness of the clay you can very easily have the walls go uneven with pretty substantial thin spots. To minimise this risk just keep your elbows tight and keep good form and tension in the shoulders and forearms

A sponge and three finger technique can help spread the load across a larger part of the wall and keep the throwing nice and even too.

Now as for the design I didn’t quite know what i wanted to put on the top of the neck so i settled on a twist effect, once its in its leather hard to green ware stage ill then just clean up the lines very lightly with a sponge!

Hope you enjoyed this post!!

Unveiling the Art of Hand Building: Crafting a Modernist Brutalist Sculpture Vase

Join us as we dive into the captivating world of pottery and ceramics, where creativity knows no bounds. Starting with a solid block of clay and armed with clay tools and a round dowel, we embark on an exhilarating adventure of hand building.

With precise intent, we plunge the dowel into the heart of the clay, creating a void brimming with potential. We use our clay tools sculpt the exterior, as well as carefully cut with a wire halfway towards the void, laying the groundwork for what’s to come.

Now for the magic of centrifugal force. With each spin, the clay responds, gracefully opening up into a mesmerizing modernist shape. It’s as if the clay itself is whispering secrets of beauty and elegance, reflecting the essence of its creator in every curve and contour.

Once the sculpture takes its final form, it undergoes a transformative process of drying, bisque firing, and glazing. Each step imbues the vase with character and charm, culminating in a masterpiece that transcends time and trends.

So, are you ready to unleash your creativity and craft your own modernist marvel? Join us on this artistic odyssey and discover the endless possibilities of hand building pottery.
