This is one of the quickest and easiest forms to throw on the wheel, It uses the simplest of tools and doesn’t require too much effort if you do the right steps to begin with
All you need is a straight metal rib or credit card and a throwing sponge
1: Centre and cone the clay
2: Begin To Form The Base: Depending on how much clay you have put down on the wheel head, determines how large you pot can be. Forming of the base is key in the first step of this type of fast throwing, you’ll have to make sure its properly formed with enough clay sitting on the walls to allow you to throw the pot to height
3: Using The Sponge: Using the sponge at the beginning of the wall pulls, will allow you to throw it twice as fast, the larger surface area allows you to move more clay with each pull, Plus minimising the risk of your finger poking through the walls. It also has has the benefit of not allowing the clay to dry out from the rotational friction
4: Use Throwing Ribs, Whether it’s a metal, wood, hard rubber or even a credit card. Throwing ribs are one of the most practical tools in creating your pots, not only is it beneficial for removing the slip from the outside of your pots. It is also very good for evening out the walls of your pot.
By applying pressure from the inside out, the clay will rest onto the surface of the rib and help you even out any lumps of uneven sections of the wall, giving you a more structurally sound pot.
Pushing the clay onto the rib, rather than the rib pushing onto the clay is a better technique for minimising risk of gouging the wall
Throwing these pots as simple as they may be, Is a really good way for you to not only practice your throwing, but it also gives you the benefit of being able to create a pot very quickly, for either glaze testing, or a simple pot for under glaze painting.
Hope you enjoyed this post and as always, Happy Potting! 🥳
