While I’ve done a few videos on this, you may learn something different!
Centering the Clay:
* Place the clay on the wheel’s center (centre is key) and apply pressure with your hands to secure it firmly.
* Begin the wheel at a slow speed and gradually increase it as you work to center the clay.
* Focus on maintaining equal pressure from the top and sides of the clay, guiding it into a symmetrical cone shape.
* Successfully centering the clay is crucial for a balanced and even bowl shape.
* Opening the Bowl:
* With the clay centered, create a depression in the middle using your thumbs and fingers. Then form the base of the bowl focusing on compressing the base to minimise the risk of “S” cracks
* Start from the center and apply consistent pressure while gradually widening the depression, forming the bowl’s base.
* Maintain an even thickness at the base to ensure the bowl’s stability while adding an elegant aesthetic touch.
* Pulling Up the Walls:
* Once the base is formed, begin pulling up the walls of the bowl by applying gentle pressure with your hands.
* Gradually raise the walls to the desired height, keeping an eye on the even thickness throughout.
* Use a combination of upward and outward motions to shape the walls and maintain an even curve.
* Shaping the Bowl:
* Determine the style and design of your bowl – whether it be a shallow, wide bowl or a deeper, narrow one.
* Utilize your fingers and rubber ribs to shape the bowl’s profile and refine the overall form.
* Pay attention to the rim, ensuring it is even and aesthetically pleasing, with a slight outward flare for better functionality. (Use a bit of shammy to smooth the rim, gives a better result for the glaze)
* Finishing Touches:
* Once satisfied with the shape, use a sponge or steel rib to smooth out any imperfections on the bowl’s exterior.
* Create a smooth transition from the base to the walls, enhancing the bowl’s overall look and feel.
* Trim any excess clay from the bottom, providing a stable base and a professional finish.
