So today’s pot didn’t turn out the way I initially wanted it to go but I do think I just found a new design!
Majority of the time, I’d usually just throw something like this out once it collapses, but for some reason I decided to play around with the walls to get a possible abstract look, and happy to say after a week of drying, the bowl is still intact with no cracks and drying perfectly
I will however for teaching purposes explain why the walls collapsed in on itself
1: My clay to water ratio was too little.
It’s a good thing to remember that the thinner you throw up walls, the less water it needs, you can get a bit complacent at times and get into the motion of throwing without really thinking, this was one of those times for me.
I got caught up in motion of throwing the wall as high as I could get it that I wasn’t paying attention that my sponge was getting dipped in the water after every pull. Now in most cases it’s fine and doesn’t cause a problem but in this case of throwing some extremely thin walls, A lack of judgment ensured a undesired effect (to a certain extent)
2: I left a little too much clay up at the top of the wall.
Throwing is a lot about keeping the integrity of the piece. If you build a house with four wooden posts in each corner and expect to place a steel framed roof on top you’ll be soon met with a collapsed house.
The same can be said for throwing, if you leave too much clay towards the top of the wall and make the base of that wall too thin? It’s going to collapse, and with centrifugal force added to that its got a lot of physics against it
So pay attention to your wall thickness and always try to get it a uniform as possible
Once again hope you enjoyed this post and Happy Potting!!! 🥳🥳
We will be back tomorrow with some more tips and ideas ❤️
