Secret revealed. Christine’s Pumpkin

Uncover the magic of hand-built ceramics with our quick guide to sculpting a captivating textured pumpkin.

1. Begin by rolling out clay to an ideal 8mm thickness, laying the foundation for your exquisite piece.

2. Cut two circular clay pieces using templates, forming the body of the pumpkin.

3. Place each piece on round plaster moulds with meticulous alignment for a flawless result.

4. Once dry, remove from moulds and trim the edges for snug fit.

5. Score, slip, and bring together the two halves to seamlessly connect both.

6. Pinch a seam and use clay tools to compress and smooth joins for a polished finish.

7. Shape the pumpkin using clay tools, adding a small hole at the bottom to release vapour during the kiln firing.

8. Craft the pumpkin’s stalk by rolling out some clay.

9. Score, slip, and attach the stalk to the top of the pumpkin.

10. Achieve a smooth finish by detailing the pumpkin with a damp sponge tool.

11. Add texture by pressing clay into a sprig/plant mould, remove when firm, then proceed to score, slip, and attach moulded clay sprigs to build up surface design.

12. Refine any rough areas with clay tools, particularly where texture is applied.

13. Ensure thorough drying by covering your masterpiece with plastic bags to prevent uneven drying.

14. Finish the process with a bisque firing before applying glaze, culminating in a final glaze fire for a breathtaking finish.
