Making A Pottery Cup: Breaking The Norms

Had the urge to make a cup that breaks the norms as to what a cup should look like. My ideas at first was to make a more conical shape with a flare to the bottom, but with anything to do with art you must always go with the flow and change designs if you seem fit

By all means comment below if you enjoyed this post or have any other further questions 🤗

To make your own I’ve included some tips below:

1. Decide on the shape and style of your cup. You can create anything from a classic cylindrical shape to more creative and unique designs. For this particular shape I did make sure to keep the round shapes as strong as I can by keeping the walls thick, this will mean when your attaching the handle, you won’t have problems with walls wanting to collapse

2. Let the cup dry until it reaches the “leather hard” stage. At this point, the clay is firm but still slightly flexible. This can take anywhere from 6-48 hrs depending on weather and the climate you live in, If you find the cup is too unstable to pickup in your hands then its too soft and need some time left to dry out, using a plastic bag during this process will help eliminate the cup, drying out too quickly or drying out unevenly

2. When making your handle I like to start with coiling a ball of clay to get it roughly the size you’ll want your handle to be! This is a very quick way to get your handles made fast and effectively, it also allows you to get a nice long handle for multiple cups at the same time, the only thing left to do is pull the handles into shape

3. Blend the handle attachment points seamlessly with the cup’s surface. Smooth out any visible seams or gaps with a damp sponge or tool. Make sure to use slip and score the surface before attaching.

4. I generally wait another 48 to 72 hours before finishing off the handle with a sponge. Generally when you attach your handle on the cup it is still a little too soft. So wait until it’s firm enough that you can finish the surface. this will also save your handle getting distorted.
