Now this design is a LOT of fun to do. It’s not super hard but very rewarding!
Bowls are probably one of the most functional pieces you can make and can always serve a purpose for something, so to be able to throw you own is always a bonus.
Some tips for throwing your own:
1. Get that clay centre: Getting the clay centre on your wheel head is especially important for when throwing bowls. As clay that is not centre will cause problems when trying to bring the walls up and get that unique bowl shape.
2. Not too much water: Due to the curvature of the bowl, it is one of the most collapsible shapes if it is too wet. Make sure your sponge is not saturated with water when you are shaping your bowl. Less water the better.
3. Take your time: Pushing the clay out and shaping it with its round bottom and straight walls defines a bowl, as basically a bowl! You do want to take this process very slowly and don’t rush it. If you’re not supporting your hands when pushing the clay out, it can very easily go out of shape. Slow and steady wins the race!
Support your hands by keeping them together when pulling and using your natural support of your chest to give it stability, a lot like a tripod. Lock those elbows in and allow your arms to almost become one with the frame of your body.
Hope you enjoyed this post and as always, Happy Potting! 🥳
We will be back tomorrow with some more tips and ideas ❤️
